DOING TIME, DOING VIPASSANA (1997)

DOING TIME, DOING VIPASSANA (1997)
"This is the story of an ancient meditation technique named Vipassana, which shows people how to take control of their lives and channel them toward their own good. It is the story of a strong woman named Kiran Bedi, the former Inspector General of Prisons in New Delhi, who strove to transform the notorious Tihar Prison and turn it into an oasis of peace. But most of all it is the story of prison inmates who underwent profound change, and who realized that incarceration is not the end but possibly a fresh start toward an improved and more positive life. These people have shown that reform can work if it is self-reform. Their success has been so dramatic that recently the Indian Government decided to apply Vipassana in all the country's prisons. Other countries are becoming interested as well. The filmmakers spent about two weeks inside Tihar Central Prison in New Delhi and Baroda Jail in the Indian state of Gujarat."

LAND ART | ANDREW VAN DER MERWE

ANDREW VAN DER MERWE | African beach calligraphy doodles
"These doodles are done using instruments and techniques I have developed over the past 6 years. Before that, like anyone else, I did a lot of scratching with sticks. As a calligrapher I have a particular interest in African colonial and pre-colonial writing systems, so when I doodle on the beach its often along these lines. The more angular letter styles take their inspiration from Tifinagh, the script of the Tuareg people of North Africa. It is interesting how that, even to this day, the Tifinagh resembles ancient Greek and Phoenician. The more complex-looking characters in some pieces are usually taken from the Adinkra symbols of the Akan people of Ghana and the Ivory Coast. The last piece was inspired by the structure the characters on Bamana mud cloth. They're mostly meaningless doodles - a play with form - and thanks to Matthew Battles, I now know the word for that: asemic. Look it up - cool stuff. I guess if I had to get serious, I'd use the actual forms and write some interesting text." - Andrew Van Der Merwe

INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHS OF NEPAL | Sean Lynch

INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHS OF NEPAL | Sean Lynch
"New York-based photographer Sean Lynch was in Nepal in September and captured these surreal, infrared photographs of Nepal. The photos were taken in the Annapurna Himalayan Range but their unique, reddish quality makes them look like something out of a Dr. Seuss book. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Cat in the Hat fall out of the sky with a loud “Bump.” You can see the entire set over on his tumblr site Dorialusium."
