THE CRYPTIK MAHAKALA
THE CRYPTIK MAHAKALA
The Mahakala Buddha is a Dharmapala, or "Protector of Dharma," and is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists' alike. In Hinduism, Mahakala is a name of Shiva. In Tibetan Buddhism, he is the wrathful form of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and protects one from dangers and bad influences that one might encounter on their path to enlightenment. Tibetans generally refer to Mahakala simply as, "the protector," and is seen as the protector of the Dalai Lamas. Mahakala's main goal is to destroy the passions of the mind and to protect the faithful. While Mahakala can be fierce, aggressive and destructive at times, his main motivation is to destroy ignorance. In Japanese folklore, Mahakala enjoys an exalted position as a household deity as one of the Seven Lucky Gods and is variously considered to be the god of wealth, or of the household.
